The Blue Jays pulled off a buzzer-beater ahead of Tuesday's Trade Deadline, acquiring second baseman and outfielder Whit Merrifield from the Kansas City Royals.

Merrifield, who didn't travel with the Royals to Toronto for a series last month because he was not vaccinated against COVID-19, was in the final year of his contract and had been the subject of trade rumors for several years.

The Royals had been reluctant to move on from Merrifield, who has been a fan favorite in Kansas City since he was drafted by the team in 2010.

However, it became clear in recent weeks that the Royals were willing to listen to offers for Merrifield, who is now 32 years old and is in the decline of his career.

The Blue Jays are hoping that Merrifield can provide a boost to their offense and defense, which has struggled at times this season.

In return for Merrifield, the Royals are reportedly getting a package of prospects, including outfielder Samad Taylor and pitcher Max Castillo.
